FNRPG Playtest #1
(originally posted 2/9/24 on Facebook)
Today I got a group of folks together to playtest Fornever Role-Playing Game! Creating characters identified a few rules that I'll need to take a closer look at, and our first combat revealed some issues that may or may not be unique to this playtest group. I'm fixin' to put together two more playtest groups (possibly more) to really dig in and see what's going on under the hood of this system.
I know what you're wondering: what is the adventuring party like? Here you go:
An Earth facet shark beastfolk beastmaster
A Fire facet elven knight
A Water facet echo druid
An Earth facet dwarven knight
An Earth facet half elf/half kitsune wizard
A Fire facet bobcat beastfolk druid
Some interesting bits of information that jump out at me follow.
THREE EARTHLINGS. All bionids have an elemental facet (subtype), and FNRPG has seven elements. Elemental Earth seemed popular and the players considered it the element of nature (which I totally dig), and the shark beastfolk likes the idea of being a "sand shark."
TWO BEASTFOLK. Beastfolk are one of the species that are more complex to make because you have more options available at character creation. What sort of beast are you? Do you have a bobcat head, or just feline features and claws? Do you have a tail? Beastfolk are one of my favorite species in Fornever Role-Playing Game (shhh, I like them all!).
ELVES, ECHOES, AND HALF-ELVES. We didn't discuss the ideas of the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, but the echo's player sort of looked at the echoes as "dark elves." The half-elf is cool because I wanted to have easy rules for making a mixed species, but I had taken those rules out of the current rules document.
TWO KNIGHTS, TWO DRUIDS. I was surprised that we had not one, but two doubled archetypes! There are 15 character archetypes in the game. Knights are combat-oriented with an emphasis on courage and defense. Druids are magic-users who are in tune with the natural world.
Anyway, just some impressions about the characters and the first session. Next week we're going to try using some digital tools to help with combat. I'm also still planning to run more playtest groups.
